Story

When Junior Soprano leaves the court, he is surrounded by a crowd of media outlets and accidentally bumps his head against a tripod microphone, causing him to fall down the steps. He was taken to the hospital with a concussion. Initially, the Junior behaves as if he is confused, and the doctor suggests that Corrado could have developing dementia , and it could be aggravated by a concussion, but later, the Junior seems to be in order and he enjoys his stay in the hospital as a respite from the court. Tony thinks a head bang can be a brilliant opportunity for Junior: Tony offers his lawyer, Harold Melvoyne, that they could use this to defend Junior through a statement of his unsustainable mental abilities, and Junior will have to act like he has Alzheimer . Tony tells him that he will have to act like a madman, and this will put an end to his problems with the law. The state appoints a psychiatrist to assess Uncle Junior’s mental state at his home. She asks him at the kitchen table. He pretends that he remembers almost nothing, while Tony's sister, Janice, shows two thumbs up to Bobby Bakale for Junior's "performance". In the morning, some time later, FBI agents stationed outside of Junior’s home see his house nurse delivering him home after going for an ice cream; Junior seems to be standing sincerely confused in his living room.

While Ralph Sifaretto's 12-year-old son, Justin, and his friend play unattended Lord of the Rings with a bow and arrow, Justin was accidentally shot in the chest by an arrow. The maid knocks loudly on Ralph’s bathroom door while he is washing in the bathroom, urging him to help Justin. Ralph runs out and discovers that his son is lying on the ground, bleeding and unconscious. Justin was quickly taken to the hospital, where he remains in a coma. In the hospital waiting room, Ralph furiously attacks his ex-wife and her husband (who accused him of unsuccessful supervision) and the boy who injured his son. During the skirmish, Ralph physically restrains Tony, who says that it was an accident and that when they themselves were children, they made similar reckless games. In the following days, Ralph is overwhelmed with guilt and grief and claims that he regrets his actions that he committed throughout his life. He even visits Phil Intintola’s father to try to atone for himself, creates an annual $ 20,000 scholarship at Rutgers University in honor of Jackie Jr., apologizes to Rosalie April for not being more sympathetic when her son died, and makes her offer, but she refuses.

Tony comforts Ralph when he begins to roar at Bing, bringing Tony his share of his recent earnings. Taking this opportunity, Tony admits to Ralph that he is dating Valentina La Paz. Although surprised, Ralph does not seem to protest against the new relationship, but agrees with Tony's suggestion that he should spend his therapeutic time in the stable with the Pie. Paulie, however, still holds a grudge against Ralph, especially since he found out that he jokingly called his mother (which injured her so much that she had to be hospitalized), which even made Paulie tell Johnny Sack that it Ralph made a joke about Ginny Sack.

Tony and Ralph's racehorse, Pie, dies in a stable in a fire, which the fire department regarded as an accident; however, Tony believes that it was Ralph who set fire on purpose to raise money for the $ 200,000 insurance policy he and Ralph had on his horse. After going to the stable and seeing the corpse of Pie, sealed and dragged by a tractor, Tony goes to Ralph’s house. Tony delivers the news to Ralph that the Pie is dead. Ralph expresses his condolences to Tony, but does not seem to be particularly touched by the death of the horse. He and Tony go to the kitchen, where Ralph prepares fried eggs on the stove. Ralph seems to be more focused on Tony's message about Justin's improving condition, but Tony continues to return to talking about the dead horse. When Tony suggests that Ralph could have committed the arson intentionally to get insurance, Ralph angrily assures Tony that he has nothing to do with it. Tony asks him if he has heard anything from Cork Yanucci recently - an arsonist expert who was responsible for setting fire to the restaurant Artie Bucco. Ralph is furious when he says that Tony doesn't care that he beats innocent people while he gets his money, and then makes a vile and insensitive remark that he cares so much about the horse while he eats meat from the dish. In a furious rage, Tony beats Ralph, beating him throughout the kitchen. The two fight briefly when Ralph unsuccessfully defends himself with a pot, pan, knife and Raid spray. The battle culminates when Tony yells at Ralph: "You killed her!" He strangles him and bangs his head on the floor in the kitchen until he finally dies.

Tony attracts Christopher Moltisanti - at the wrong time, when Christopher just injected heroin and begins to doze off on the couch - to help him get rid of his body, explaining that Ralph was already dead when he arrived. Although he is in a heroin stupor, Christopher doesn’t seem to be fooled by Tony’s version, but he is also not against what happened. Christopher cuts off Ralph's head with his hands in a gym bag, discovering in the process that Ralph was bald and wore a wig . When night falls, Christopher and Tony get rid of Ralph's body, dismembering and throwing him from a cliff into the quarry. They carry his remains to an orphan farm owned by Father Mikey Palmichi, who is hospitalized. Since the ground is frozen, Tony uses an excavator to dig a hole while he scolds Christopher for using drugs. Christopher tells Tony that Ralphy’s “sewn” can be a problem, to which Tony replies: “You are the only one who knows about this.” They then wash in Bad Bing and get rid of the clothes that need to be burned.

Tony wakes up at the strip club the next morning, calling out the name of Christopher, but realizes that he has already left. Tony then sees an image of Tracey, stripper Bud Bing, who was killed by Ralph. Tony then flings open the back door of the club, and leaves the darkness in the blinding daylight of the next day.

Died

  • Pie and several other horses: died in a fire in the stable. The insurance company considered this an accident.
  • Ralph Sifaretto : Tony Soprano was beaten and strangled because of suspicions that he had set up a fire that killed Patty, which Ralph denies. His body is then dissected and beheaded with the help of Christopher Moltisanti.

Title

  • Tony uses the phrase “whoever does this” during a discussion with Christopher, who was really responsible for Ralphi’s death.

Links to previous episodes

  • When Tony confronts Ralph about the fire, he asks him about Corky Janucci. Tony believes that Ralph hired him to set up a fire that killed Pie. Silvio also apparently used Yanucci to help blow up Vesuvio, a restaurant owned by Artie Bucco in a pilot episode .
  • When Tony looks in the mirror the morning after Ralph’s murder, he sees the image of Tracy, the stripper Bud Bing, whom Ralph killed in the episode " University ".
  • At the University, Tony and Silvio note that stripper Tracy is a good looking “purebred”. The pie is also a good looking thoroughbred, and Ralph is suspected of killing both of them.
  • At the University, Ralph was particularly obsessed with films about gladiators , quoting Radiley Scott 's Gladiator and watching Spartak Kubrick . Ralph himself dies in a brutal deadly duel.
  • In Wes , Johnny Sack tells Ralph: "I should have let Tony chop off your head a year ago." Ironically, this is really what happens to Ralph.

Other cultural references

  • Carmela wears a shirt from Columbia University when with Tony and her son in the kitchen.
  • After the murder of Ralph, Tony and Christopher watch "The Last Time I Seeed Paris." The film is freely based on the story of F. Scott Fitzgerald "Again in Babylon."

Music

  • “When I Need You” Leo Seyer plays when Ralph is in the bathroom.
  • The original recording of "Sincerely" The Moonglows plays while Carmela and Rosalie dine at Vesuvio.
  • The song playing during the final credits is "The Man with the Harmonica" Apollo 440 . She was originally from the soundtrack of Ennio Morricone to the film Once Upon a Time in the Wild West by Sergio Leone . The harmonica man was played by Charles Bronson .
  • Although it didn’t sound, the Rolling Stones song “ Sympathy For The Devil ” was referenced three times through various dialogs, directly referring to Ralph as the devil. Ralph to the surgeon: "Please, let me introduce myself." Intintol's father to Ralph: "Were you there when Jesus Christ had a moment of doubt and pain?" Tony to Paulie: "Paulie, his child is in the hospital. At least a little fucking sympathy, eh?" The references hint that Ralph is portrayed with little sympathy in this episode.

Inspiration for a Real Crime

Jason Batista was convicted of the murder of his mentally ill mother in Riverside, California , on January 14, 2003, then tossing her headless body while her hands were chopped off on Ortega Highway in Orange County . Jason's stepbrother, Matthew Montejo, who was 15 when Jason killed their mother, testified in court that he helped get rid of her body and that they had the idea to cut off her head and hands to hide the crime from this episode.
