During his reign, Denmark extended its influence in the territory of the Holy Roman Empire along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea ( Pomerania , Mecklenburg , Holstein ). Knud's role in the expansion of Danish territory was less significant compared with the activities of his brother Valdemar, Duke of Holstein (later Danish king Valdemar II the Victorious ), and the Danish archbishop Absalon .
Foreign Policy
Knud's father appointed him co-regent in 1170, initiating the rule of his descendants. In 1182, Knud took the throne and pursued a policy that was independent of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Frederick I, on the advice of Absalon. As a result of the successful campaign of Absalon ( 1184 ), Knud gained power over Pomerania in 1185 . Soon the Slavic territories of Mecklenburg and the frontier possessions of the German princes were conquered.
The increased role of Denmark in European politics was confirmed by the marriage of Knud's sister Ingeborga in the French king Philip II Augustus in 1196 . However, after 3 months, the marriage was dissolved at the initiative of Philip II.
Denmark also intervened in disputes between the German princes. After 1192, the Danish policy in the southern direction was determined by Knud's brother Waldemar, who expanded possessions to the East Baltic territories as far as the Oder River. In 1197 a crusade was organized in Estonia .
Marriages
In 1177 he married Gertrude - the daughter of the Duke of Saxony and Bavaria Heinrich Leo . They had no children.
