Biography

The real name of Chayanna is Elmer Figueroa-Arce. Elmer was born on June 28, 1968 in San Lorenzo (Puerto Rico) [2] .

His musical career began in 1979, when at 11 he became a member of the Puerto Rican boy band Los Chicos, created in the likeness of the popular boy band Menudo and to compete with him on the charts [2] . Although Los Chicos did not reach the level of popularity comparable to Menudo, nevertheless they were quite popular: they released 5 albums (1980, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984), had their own television show, played in a television movie specially shot for them [2] .

In 1984, the group broke up, and Chayann almost immediately began a solo career. His first album was Chayanne es min nombre on RCA Records (1984). The next album, Sangre latina, was released in 1986 [2] .

But worldwide popularity came to the singer when he switched to the Sony label and released two albums, both simply entitled Chayanne (1988 and 1989). Especially popular was the 1989 album, which brought Chayanna a Grammy nomination in the category "Best Latin Pop Performance" (now renamed to "Best Latin Pop Album"). The songs “Fiesta en America”, “Violeta”, “Te deseo” and “Para tenerte otra vez” were released as separate singles and became big hits. In addition, the album was translated into Portuguese and in this version became a hit in Brazil [2] .

Since then, Chayann regularly, with a frequency of about 2 years, releases new albums: Tiempo de vals (1990), Provocame (1992), Influencias (1994), Volver a nacer (1996), Atado a tu amor (1998) , Simplemente (2000), Sincero (2003), Cautivo (2005), Mi tiempo (2007), No hay imposibles (2010), En Todo Estaré (2014). Moreover, each of them sold better than the previous one. He also released several collections of the best hits: Grandes exitos (2002), Desde siempre (2005), etc. and several concert albums: Vivo (2008), A solas con Chayanne (2012), etc. [2]
