Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1948 Olympic Light Heavyweight Championship (up to 87 kilograms) were held in London from August 3 to 6, 1948 in the Empress Hall.
The tournament was held according to the system with the accrual of penalty points. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, a fighter received one penalty point for a victory in points, two penalty points for a defeat in points 2–1, and three penalty points for a defeat with a score of 3–0. The wrestler who scored five penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The wrestlers who reached the final held meetings with each other. If they have already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. The battle according to the tournament regulations lasted 20 minutes. If no carcass was recorded within the first ten minutes, then the judges could determine the wrestler with the advantage. If no one was given an advantage, then six minutes of fighting in the stalls were appointed, with each of the wrestlers being down for three minutes (the order was determined by lot). If one of the wrestlers was given an advantage, then he had the right to choose the following six minutes of struggle: either in the ground on top, or in the rack. If after six minutes a clear victory was not recorded, then the remaining four minutes, the wrestlers fought in the stance.
Light heavyweight 14 participants fought. The 1947 European champion was the Soviet athlete Konstantin Koberidze, but the USSR team did not participate in the Olympic Games. One of the favorites was called Dyula Kovacs, European vice-champion of 1947. However, he lost in the first round to future champion Karl-Eric Nilsson and, despite further victories, dropped out in the fourth round. Nilsson met in the final with Kelpo Gröndahl and won by unanimous decision. The third place was taken by the Egyptian Ibrahim Orabi , a participant in the 1936 Olympic Games, who dropped out in the penultimate circle.
