History
Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by American industrialist Peter Cooper , who was an inventor, successful entrepreneur, and one of the richest businessmen in the United States. [3] One of his desires was to enable talented young people to get a good education in an institution that would be affordable and free for everyone. [four]
Originally called simply “The Union”, the educational institution was engaged in free adult education in evening classes in applied sciences and architectural graphics , including for women - in photography, telegraphy, typewriting and shorthand. At the beginning of the activity, the college reading room was open around the clock. In 1902, full-time engineering education was started with funding from entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie . Cooper Union's Board of Directors included Daniel Fawcett Tiemann , John Edward Parsons , Horace Greeley, and William Bryant , and later included Augustus Saint-Godens , Thomas Edison, and William Francis Deegan.
The free Cooper Union classes were an important milestone in American history and the prototype of what is now called continuing education, transforming into three schools - Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture , School of Art and Albert Nerken School of Engineering . The dream of Peter Cooper about education "at the best level" has become a reality. Since 1859, thousands of artists, architects and engineers who have become leaders in their fields of activity have been brought up at the college.
Since 1864, there have been several attempts to combine Cooper Union and Columbia University , but they have not been realized. In 1897, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Smithsonian Design Museum , was founded as part of the Cooper Union, and Peter Cooper's great-granddaughters, Sarah, Elinor, and Amy Hewitt, participated in the education.
