Baron O'Neill from Shane Castle in County Antrim is an ancestral title in the United Kingdom Peer system . It was created on April 18, 1868 for the composer Rev. William O'Neill (1813-1883). Born as William Chichester, in 1855 after the death of his cousin John Bruce Richard O'Neill, 3rd Viscount O'Neill (1780-1855), he received royal permission for the name "O'Neal" instead of "Chichester" and inherited the estate of his late cousin . William Chichester came from O'Neill through Mary Chichester, daughter of Henry O'Neill of Shane Castle. Lord O'Neill was a descendant of Colonel John Chichester (d. 1647), the younger brother of Arthur Chichester, 2nd Earl of Donegal (d. 1678 ). John and Arthur Chichester were the nephews of Arthur Chichester, 1st Earl of Donegal (1606–1675), and grandchildren of Edward Chichester, 1st Viscount Chichester (1568–1648).
Lord O'Neill's successor was his eldest son, Edward O'Neill, 2nd Baron O'Neill (1839-1928). He represented the county of Antrim from the conservative party in the House of Commons of Great Britain (1863-1880).
His eldest son and heir, the Honorable Arthur O'Neill (1876–1914), also a conservative politician, met in the House of Commons from Middle Antrim (1910–1914). He died in battle at the beginning of the First World War . Therefore, the 2nd baron was succeeded by his grandson, Shane O'Neill, the 3rd baron O'Neill (1907-1944), the son of the venerable Arthur O'Neill . He died in battle in Italy during World War II . As of 2014, the title holder was his son, Raymond Arthur O'Neill, 4th Baron O'Neill (born 1933 ), who succeeded his father in 1944 . He served as Lord Lieutenant of Antrim (1994-2008).
The other two members of the O'Neill family also have a peers title. Hugh O'Neill, 1st Baron Retkeven (1883-1982), was the youngest son of the second Baron O'Neill. Terence O'Neill, Baron O'Neill of Maine (1914-1990), Prime Minister of Northern Ireland (1963-1969) and leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (1963-1969), younger brother of the 3rd Baron O'Neill.
