On the musical side, it is a mixture of pop and dance music, with a great influence of Eurodance , which makes the album significantly different from the previous work. In addition, on the album you can hear other genres: techno , house , disco , drum and bass and elements of Latin American music . Vocally, Cher's voice sounds stronger, deeper and better controlled than on previous recordings. Most tracks from the album use a vocoder . The album reveals the themes of love, grief, romance and freedom.

After the release, the album received mixed ratings from critics. Some of them praised the singer’s new musical direction, but criticized the excessive use of auto-tun in songs. The album was nominated for three Grammy Awards , eventually receiving one - "Best Dance Record". The album was very successful, reaching 4th position on the Billboard 200 , the album was four times certified platinum RIAA . The album topped the charts of Germany, Austria, New Zealand, Denmark and Portugal, hit the top 10 in the UK, Canada, France, Spain and several other countries. By mid-1999, more than 20,000,000 copies of the album were sold [2] , making it the most commercially successful album of the late 90s along with Madonna's "Ray Of Light".

Four singles were released from the album, including " Believe ", Cher's most successful single, topping the charts in 23 countries and selling over 11 million copies. [3] Then another successful single, Strong Enough , and the much less successful All or Nothing and Dov'è l'amore , were released. As part of the album’s promotion, Cher went on tour Do You Believe? Tour in 1999 and 2000. The tour was well received by critics and became commercially successful. Critics noted the influence of the album on pop music, especially the spread of dance music and the introduction of auto-tun in pop culture; ultimately this technique is known as the "Cher effect". [4] Critics also noted how Cher presented herself in a new way, while remaining popular and modern among the youth of that period.

About the album

After a poorly received previous album It's a Man's World , Warner persuaded Cher to record a dance album. [5] Cher began working on Believe in the summer of 1998 in London with producers Mark Taylor and Brian Rowling, who had previously worked with Rob Deakins ; Also among the producers were Todd Terry ("Taxi Taxi") and Junior Vasquez (originally working on "Dov'è L'Amore", but the version sent from New York was rejected by Deakins, giving work on the song to Taylor and Rowling [6] ) Cher also worked with her old friend Diane Warren (she wrote "Takin 'Back My Heart") and recorded cover versions of two songs: "The Power" ( Amy Grant ) and "Love Is the Groove" ( Betsy Cook . Also, she decided to include in the album a remix of her 1988 single " We All Sleep Alone " from her 1987 album Cher (album) .

The song " Believe " was originally written only by Brian Higgins, Matt Gray, Stuart McLennen and Tim Powell and circulated for many months in Warner Bros. like an unnecessary demo. Mark Taylor said: “Everyone loved the chorus, but not the rest of the song; since we already wrote other songs for Cher, Rob asked us if we could improve this song. Our two authors, Steve Torch and Paul Barry, took part and in the end we made a full version of the song that Rob and Cher liked. " [6]

During the early sessions, Cher recorded a cover version of John Paul Young's song "Love Is in the Air," which she performed an acapella during the conversation with The Magic Hour . The song was produced and mixed by Junior Vasquez, but did not make it onto the album’s final tracklist. Now the song can be found on the Internet.

The album marked Cher's new musical direction, using auto-tun , especially in the title track. The disc is dedicated to Sonny Bono , Cher's ex-husband, who died a year earlier at a ski resort in Nevada .

Critics' ratings

After the release, the album was received by mixed reviews from critics. Michael Gallucci called the album "the last step to the playground" and said that "Cher just moves through a ton of production with one gray vocal range into one endless, monotonous and predictable tune" and put the album 2.5 stars out of 5. The main criticism concerned excessive using an auto-tune that changed Cher’s voice. Beth Johnson rated the album 4-, comparing it with Madonna’s Ray of Light album : "Just a minute, this dance record mimics Ray of Light , paying tribute to the days of Donna Summer's disco music!" But she also noted that the album "is unstable, heterogeneous, but we must love the way Cher is shown!"

Commercial Success

The album debuted at No. 39 on the Australian album chart, ultimately reaching No. 13, and was certified twice by the platinum ARIA . The album also debuted from position 41 and reached the top of the New Zealand chart, where it was also certified twice with the platinum RIANZ . The album peaked at number 2 in Sweden, where it went platinum [7] ( Believe is the 73rd best-selling record of all time in Sweden). In France, the album took 5th place and lasted 47 weeks on the chart, was certified platinum in this country. The album topped the Austrian chart and stayed there for 37 weeks, was certified twice platinum. The album was very successful in the world, becoming Cher's most successful record in her career.

In 1999, the album received a Grammy nomination for " Best Vocal Pop Album ", and the title track received a nomination for " Record of the Year ." The album won only one Grammy for Best Dance Record.

In 1999 and 2000, Cher was nominated for many more awards, including the Billboard Music Awards - "Performer of the Year".
