The station is located on the Monticello Reservoir in Fairfield County, South Carolina , 27 miles northwest of the city of Columbia .
In 2012, a license was obtained for the construction of two new NPP units (2nd and 3rd) with AP-1000 reactors.
Extreme complexity, high cost and 4 years of national regulators not envisaged by the project to obtain a license for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants became fatal for VC Summer. The rise in price and the delay of the project due to the requirements of American regulators led to the fact that in March 2017 Toshiba / Westighouse could not withstand overspending on the construction projects of Vogtle and VC Summer nuclear plants, and Westinghouse went into bankruptcy.
On July 31, 2017, VC Summer owner companies announced the impossibility of completing blocks 2 and 3 with the latest Westinghouse AP-1000 reactors [1] .
