Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1948 Olympic Welterweight Championship (up to 73 kilograms) were held in London from August 3 to 6, 1948 at the Empress Hall.
The tournament was held according to the system with the accrual of penalty points. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, a fighter received one penalty point for a victory in points, two penalty points for a defeat in points 2–1, and three penalty points for a defeat with a score of 3–0. The wrestler who scored five penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The wrestlers who reached the final held meetings with each other. If they have already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. The battle according to the tournament regulations lasted 20 minutes. If no carcass was recorded within the first ten minutes, then the judges could determine the wrestler with the advantage. If no one was given an advantage, then six minutes of fighting in the stalls were appointed, with each of the wrestlers being down for three minutes (the order was determined by lot). If one of the wrestlers was given an advantage, then he had the right to choose the following six minutes of struggle: either in the ground on top, or in the rack. If after six minutes a clear victory was not recorded, then the remaining four minutes, the wrestlers fought in the stance.
Welterweight 16 participants fought. In the absence of the 1947 European champion Yashar Dogu , who concentrated on freestyle wrestling, there were no favorites as such. The Swede Joesta Andersson and the Hungarian Miklos Silvasi reached the final without defeats, and Andersson won in the final meeting. At the next Olympic Games in the finals there will be the same couple, only Silvashi will take revenge. Third place went to Henrik Hansen, a Danish retirement in the penultimate circle.
