Usinsk manganese deposit

Usinskoye is a manganese deposit in Russia . Located in the Kemerovo region , 60 km north of Mezhdurechensk in the Usa river basin in the middle of the Kuznetsk Alatau mountain range. The operator of the deposit is the Russian company CHEK-SU . It is planned to send all mined ore for processing through the ridge to the village of Tuim , and dump the waste from the activity of this production into the Usa River, which flows into the Tom River.

The stratiform deposit of the Lower Cambrian manganese ores is confined to the western steeply dipping (70-90 °) wing of the synclinal and is composed of stratum and lenticular deposits (several hundred meters long, 20-65 m thick), extending for 4-6 km in the north-west direction. Ore bodies are sometimes traced at a depth of more than 500 meters. In the northern (Fig.) And central sections, mainly rhodochrosite and manganocalcite ores alternating with manganese limestones (Mn content in ore 16.7-19.6%) are prevalent. The total thickness of the manganese ore strata exceeds 150 m. The carbonate manganese ores from the surface are oxidized: the oxidation zone is up to 40 m in the north and 50-75 m in the south. The oxidized ores are composed of psilomelan, vernadite, and less commonly pyrolyusite (Mn content 26.5-27.7%). The total reserves of manganese ores are about 100 million tons, of which 6% are oxidized (1956); according to 2006 data, ores of categories A + B + C are 69339 thousand tons.

The mountain encyclopedia says that it is possible to develop a quarry of 2 million tons of manganese ore per year with associated mining of 3 million flux limestones

Radugin named the field Usovsky in honor of M. A. Usov .

Arguments in favor of the project

Ferromanganese is used as an alloying additive in steel production. Currently, ferrous metallurgy enterprises use imported raw materials. In the early 2000s, it was decided to use the previously classified Usinsky manganese deposit.

Project Criticism

In connection with the negative impact of manganese production on the environment, public organizations of the Kemerovo Region, Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia launched a campaign against the construction of a manganese plant in the region. Residents of the Kemerovo region are planning a referendum on permitting the extraction of manganese.

The ore body itself lies directly in the channel of the Usa River.

Poor ore quality will require complex enrichment, and carbonate varieties, which make up 90 percent of all reserves, require high-temperature firing, in which air pollution is inevitable.

With existing production technologies, it is impossible to reduce the amount of phosphorus, which negatively affects the competitiveness of steel.
