Biography

Received secondary education in a small-country gymnasium . He studied philosophy, Slavic and Romance philology at Charles University in Prague, received a Ph.D. in 1931, then studied in Paris , Berlin , Freiburg , where he met Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger , met and became friends with Eugen Fink for life.

Since 1934 - Secretary of the Prague Philosophical Circle Cercle philosophique de Prague pour les recherches sur l'entendement humain . From 1936 to 1939 he taught as a private assistant professor at Charles University . After the Nazis arrived in 1939, Patochka was forced to interrupt his teaching work. In 1937 he married Helena Matoushkova.

Sharpen developed the Husserlian concept of a "life world" in the spirit of the Heideggerian idea of ​​historicity. He translated the works of Hegel and Schelling .

  • 1945-1949: taught at Charles University and Masaryk University in Brno . During the Stalinization of the Czech Republic in 1949, he was banned from teaching.
  • 1950-1954: employee of the Institute. Masaryk and Libraries. Masaryk.
  • 1954-1958: employee of the Research Institute of Pedagogy of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He was engaged in the publication of the works of Jan Amos Comenius .
  • 1958-1968: employee of the Institute of Philosophy of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, lectured in the Federal Republic of Germany .
  • 1968: received a degree in philosophy from Charles University.

Possessed great moral authority among the Czech intelligentsia. The Prague Spring movement awarded him an order, of which he was an honored pensioner until 1972. Patochka, together with Vaclav Havel , Zdenek Mlynarz , Jiri Gaek and Pavel Kohout , was one of the first signatories of the Charter-77 , which advocated respect for the rights of a citizen and a person in Czechoslovakia . After an 11-hour interrogation about his involvement in the movement, he died of a brain hemorrhage on March 13, 1977.

He was buried at the Břevnovsky cemetery in Prague.

Among his students are the playwright and politician Vaclav Havel , the philosopher and sociologist Vaclav Belogradsky .

Legacy and recognition

The works of Patochka are published in English and French; a collection of his works in 5 volumes has been published in Germany . (1987-1992). His ideas were addressed by Paul Ricoeur , Jacques Derrida and Roman Jacobson .

In 2007, the Czech Republic hosted the centenary of the thinker, the international conference “Jan Patochka, Czech History and Europe”.

Philosophy

According to Sharpen, Europe as a supranational integrity, united by the ideas of reason , appeared in the Ancient era. He belongs to the heirs of Europe the USA . By the end of Europe, he means the transition of European values ​​from the regional to the planetary level ( globalization ) that occurred after the Second World War .
