Competitions in Greco-Roman wrestling in the framework of the Olympic Games of 1948 in the lightest weight (up to 57 kilograms) were held in London from 3 to 6 August 1948 in the "Empress Hall".
The tournament was held on the system with the accrual of penalty points. Penalty points were not awarded for a clear victory, a wrestler received one penalty point for a victory on points, two penalty points for a loss on points with a score of 2-1, three penalty points for a loss with a score of 3-0 or a net defeat. The wrestler, who collected five penalty points, was eliminated from the tournament. The wrestlers who reached the final held meetings with each other. In case they had already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. Fight under the rules of the tournament lasted 20 minutes. If the carcass was not recorded within the first ten minutes, the judges could identify the fighter who has the advantage. If no one was given an advantage, then six minutes of wrestling were appointed on the ground , with each of the wrestlers being at the bottom for three minutes (the order was determined by a draw). If one of the wrestlers was given the advantage, then he had the right to choose the next six minutes of struggle: either on the ground or in the rack. If after six minutes there was no clear victory, then the remaining four minutes the fighters fought in the rack.
In the bantamies fought 13 participants. European champion in 1947, Egyptian Mahmoud Hassan was considered as a favorite. He reached the final without defeat, but in the final meeting gave way to the Swede Kurt Pettersen . The third place went to Turk Khalil Kai , who lost to Hassan in the fifth round and dropped out of the competition.
