Biography
Sergey Chernov was born on January 28 ( February 9 ), 1887 in Saratov in the family of a merchant. In 1905 he graduated from the 1st Saratov Gymnasium and entered the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University . In 1907 he was transferred to the historical department of the historical and philological faculty. In 1912 he graduated from the university and was left at the faculty to prepare for a professorship.
In 1917 he was elected privat-docent of the historical and philological faculty of the University of Saratov . Since 1918 - professor. He taught at the University of Saratov, until in 1928 he was dismissed on charges of " nationalism " [2] . Since 1929 - a member of the Archaeographic Commission, but in the same year he was dismissed in connection with the " Academic Affairs ". In the 1930s he worked in Leningrad and in Central Asia. Since 1937 - Professor at the Department of History of the USSR Gorky Pedagogical Institute [1] . In 1937 he received a doctorate in historical sciences from the totality of scientific papers [2] .
In 1939 he moved to the city of Pushkin, Leningrad Region . He worked at the Institute of the Peoples of the North, taught at the Leningrad State University and at the Leningrad City Pedagogical Institute.
Chernov's scientific interests included the Russian liberation movement of the 19th century, the history of Decembrism , the life and work of N. G. Chernyshevsky [1] .
During World War II did not have time to evacuate from Pushkin. He died on December 26, 1941 from dystrophy under German occupation (a number of Soviet sources cite the erroneous date of death on January 5, 1942 ) [3] [1] . He was buried in the Kazan cemetery of Pushkin in a mass grave with science fiction writer A. R. Belyaev [3] .
