History
- Old lighthouse [2]
The Old Lighthouse is the third oldest US lighthouse [3] : it was built by October 1792 on a hill 18 meters above sea level more than 450 meters from the coast, now this distance, due to soil erosion , is about 230 meters . The design cost of construction was $ 15,200 , but in the end it was increased by $ 2,500. The building was designed by , who was inspired by the construction , built in 1767 in Delaware . Cape Henry Lighthouse was one of the first buildings in the country, completely built at public expense (the United States as a state was formed in 1787 with the adoption of the Constitution ). In the first half of the 1860s, during the Civil War , the lighthouse was destroyed, but was restored very soon, as it was of crucial strategic importance for ships entering the Chesapeake Bay . In 1930, the old lighthouse, which has been idle for half a century, was acquired by , a company dedicated to the protection of historical and cultural monuments . As a result of the restoration, the building was added with brick cladding and an iron staircase. Nowadays, the old lighthouse is a historical museum.
- New Lighthouse [4]
In 1881, a new lighthouse was built, it is located 100 meters northeast of the old one, at an elevation of 5 meters above sea level. The construction cost was $ 100,000 . After the construction of the new lighthouse, the old one was not destroyed, since it is a good landmark in the daytime and is useful for triangulation . In 1984, the new lighthouse was fully automated.
- Historical recognition
On October 15, 1966, the old lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the USA , and on December 2, 2002, a new one was added to the register [5] . On September 9, 1969, the old lighthouse was added to the , and on September 10, 2003, a new one was added to the register [6] . On April 15, 1970, both lighthouses were recognized as national historical monuments . In 2002, the awarded the old lighthouse the title of National Historic Site of Civil Engineering.
