Mayo ; January 29, 1891 , New York , USA - December 4, 1968 , Guadalajara , Mexico ), better known as Archie Mayo ( Archie Mayo ) - American film director , screenwriter and producer . It gained popularity in the 1930s - 1940s. He was known for his picky attitude towards actors.

Biography

Archibald Mayo was born on January 29, 1891 in New York . He studied at Columbia University , which he left to start a theatrical career [2] . In 1915, Mayo appeared in Hollywood . His first job was to write jokes, and later to stage comedies. In the early 1920s, he became the screenwriter of his short comedies several times. Sometimes he wrote scripts for Jack White and Lloyd Bacon. With the advent of sound cinema, Archie Mayo got a job at Warner Brothers Studios.

In 1931, he directed the mystical film Svengali, starring John Barrymore . This picture immediately made the director a name, although it was subsequently shaded by the then-released horror films of Universal Studios .

In 1936, Archie Mayo ’s film "The Petrified Forest" was released , starring Leslie Howard and Betty Davis . According to the film critic of the Cinematec website Vladislav Shuvalov, it was this film that laid the foundation for Humphrey Bogart's stellar ascent, who played the role of the bandit Duke Manti [3] .

In total, Mayo became the director of 84 films during his career. In 1946, after filming his first color tape, the director left the cinema. In 1958, however, his short return took place when Mayo produced the painting “The Beast in Budapest”.

Archibald Mayo died in Mexico on December 4, 1968 .

Personal life

Archie Mayo was married to Lucille Wolf. The marriage lasted until her death on February 24, 1945 .
