Resistance

He was an employee of the Royal Military Police of the Netherlands in Grotegast . After the occupation by the troops of the Third Reich, the Royal Military Police lost their military status and royal prefix, and was also merged with the civilian police. In March 1943, they and their former military police colleagues were ordered to arrest Jews in the entire province of Groningen and escort them to the place of departure to a concentration camp . They refused and were arrested by the SD , and then deported to the Herzogenbush concentration camp near Vyugt . However, he managed to escape and join the Dutch underground , where, among other things, he helped the crew members of the Allied aircraft and the Jews , hiding them from the harassment of the occupation authorities and transporting them to safe places. He had a key role in hiding Jewish families in the province of Groningen, worked at night, transferring Jews from one cache to another. Also saved the lives of more than 100 allied pilots who were shot down, helped return them safely to England . On August 2, 1943, he was captured by the Gestapo and sent to the Oranjehotel Prison in Scheveningen . April 14, 1944 was executed by the Nazis on the territory of Waalsdorpervlakte .

Memory

He and his convicted colleagues Wipke Harm Thimersma , Gerard Jansen , Jakob Kraal , Jan Rickmans , Gerrit Jan van der Berg , Fokke Jagersma , Johannes Kippers regularly sang psalms , as it became known from a letter from his cellmate to his bride.

On his 65th birthday, he was recognized as a hero by US President Dwight Eisenhower , as well as by the governments of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands for his role in saving paratroopers in the Netherlands. Since Henrik Drogt managed to escape after the first arrest for disobeying the occupation authorities in terms of arresting Jewish families, until 1988 Yad Vashem did not know about him as about the Righteous.
