The X-Files (Season 8)

The eighth season of the American science fiction series The X-Files was released in the United States on the FOX television channel from November 5, 2000 to May 20, 2001 and consisted of 21 episodes. The eighth season passed after the alien abduction of Fox Mulder in the seventh season. The plot arch for Mulder's search continues until the second half of the season, while a new arc is formed about the pregnancy of Dana Scully . This arc will continue and end next season. The season covers various topics such as life, death, and faith . This season, David Duchovny as Mulder takes part only as an intermittent protagonist, appearing in only half of the episodes. Actor Robert Patrick was hired as a replacement for Mulder, playing the role of John Doggett . The season also saw Annabeth Guiche appear as Monica Reis , who will be the main character in the ninth season . In addition to changing the cast, series creator Chris Carter updated opening credits, which have remained unchanged since season one .

The eighth season was well received by critics, but was less warmly received by fans of the series, many of whom were unhappy that Dukhovny became less common. Initially, the season’s ratings were strong, but in the end, the season attracted 13.53 million viewers, compared with 14.2 million in the seventh season.

Content

Story

At the end of the seventh season in the episode " Requiem " Fox Mulder was abducted by aliens [1] . Dana Scully will meet with Special Agent John Doggett, the head of the FBI task force organized to conduct Mulder’s search activities [2] . Although the search ultimately fails, Daggett delves into the X-Files and works with Scully to investigate paranormal matters [3] . When Scully discovers that several women were reportedly abducted and soaked in alien babies, she begins to doubt her own pregnancy and fears for her unborn child [4] .

Doggett introduces Scully to special agent Monica Reis, an FBI ritual crime specialist, shortly before the body of a dead Mulder suddenly appears at night in the forest [5] . After Mulder’s funeral, Alex Krycek threatens Assistant Director Walter Skinner , forcing him to kill Scully’s baby before he is born. Billy Miles, a multiple abductee who disappeared the same night as Mulder, returns dead, but his body is resurrected and he returns completely healthy [6] . Mulder also returns after death, and Scully watches over his recovery. A completely rejuvenated Mulder is investigating several classified materials against the order, but he will soon be fired, leaving Doggett responsible for business. Mulder continues to informally contribute to the investigation. [7]

Production

Creation

The original credits created in 1993 during the filming of the first season of the series remained unchanged for seven seasons. With a partial loss of Duchovny from the series, after the finale of the seventh season, it was decided to update the credits that were first shown in the first, premiere episode of the eighth season in an episode called Inside . The sequence of frames in the screen saver included new images, updated photos of the FBI badges for Duchovny and Anderson, as well as Patrick, confining this to a change in the main cast. The Dukhovny icon appears in the splash screen only when he himself appears in the episode itself. The screensaver contains images of Scully’s pregnancy and, according to Frank Spotnitz, shows an “abstract” explanation of Mulder’s partial absence this season when Mulder falls into the pupil of the eye [8] .

After Duchovny's partial departure, Carter decided to focus solely on Doggett's character in the first half of the season. This led to some indignation on the part of actors and critics, primarily Duchovny and Anderson [9] .
