Baron Rankellur

Arthur Oswald James Hope, 2nd Baron Rankellur (1897-1958)

Baron Rankellur from Buxted in Sussex County is a hereditary title in the United Kingdom Peer System. It was created on June 28, 1932 for the conservative politician James Fitzalan Hope (1870-1949). He was the grandson of General Sir Alexander Hope (1769–1837), the fourth son of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopton (1704–1781), an ancestor of the Marquise of Linlithgow . James Fialan Hope sat in the House of Commons from Sheffield Braytside (1900-1906) and Central Sheffield (1908-1929), served as treasurer of the court (1915-1916), parliamentary and financial secretary of the Ministry of Ammunition (1919-1921), chairman of the committee of tracks and means (1921-1924, 1924-1929).

The eldest son and successor of James Hope, Arthur Oswald James Hope, 2nd Baron Rankellur (1897-1958), was also a conservative politician . He sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from Nuneaton (1924–1929) and Birmingham Aston (1931–1939), and also served as vice chamberlain of the court (1937) and treasurer of the court (1937–1939). From 1940 to 1946, he served as governor of Madras . His successor was his younger brother, Henry John Hope, 3rd Baron Rankelleur (1899-1967). After the death in 2005 of his son, Peter St. Thomas More Henry Hope, 4th Baron Rankellur (1935–2005), this family line died away. The late Baron was succeeded by his cousin, Michael Richard Hope, 5th Baron Rankellur (born 1940 ). He is the eldest son of the Honorable Richard Frederick Hope, the youngest son of the 1st Baron Rankelle.

      • Heir to the heir: Charlie James Hope (born 2003), son of the previous one.
