Claw (Marvel Comics)

The character first appeared in the Fantastic Four # 53 comic strip (August 1966) and was created by screenwriter Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby .

As a scientist, Ulysses Clough worked on an apparatus capable of transforming sounds into physical objects. To continue his research, he needed a vibranium - a metal mined only in Wakanda. Clough comes into conflict with Wakanda's superhero ruler, T'Chaka, whom Clough calmly kills. The young son of the ruler, T'Challa , who followed his father to watch him fight the invaders, then attacked Clos to avenge his father. It cost the villain his right hand, which was damaged by his own blaster ^[3] .

Claw escaped and replaced the lost arm with a device that converts signals into matter. Later, Clough turned his whole body into live sound ^[4] . Clau, as a professional criminal, fought against T'Challa, who became the new Black Panther. The superhero teamed up with the Fantastic Four in one team, as a result of which Clos was defeated ^[5] .

Clau was imprisoned, but released by the Crimson Cloak, which turned out to be Ultron . Joining the second incarnation of the team of the Lords of Evil, Cloe and other villains fought against the Avengers . The Avengers, however, defeated them with the help of the Black Panther. Clough tried to reform the second team of the Lords of Evil to fight the Avengers, but his plans were frustrated by the entire female team of the Lady the Liberator ^[6] .

He managed to escape and settled in the country of Rudyaard, neighboring Wakanda, where he helped to steal a device that improves the properties of Vibranium. Claw was defeated at the hands of the Creature , the Human Torch, and the Black Panther ^[7] .

In prison, Clos teamed up with Solarr to avenge the Avengers. Clough managed to catch them in the sound barrier. Ulysses demanded that the Black Panther renounce the throne of Wakanda, diplomatic immunity and the dissolution of the government of Rudyard. However, Panther managed to neutralize Clos and Solarar before they began to kill the hostages ^[8] .

Some time later, a representative of the Shinarian race contacted Clough, who needed his sound abilities to open a large enough portal to Earth for their armada to invade. Klo agreed and, after a clash with Ka-Zar in London, went with the Shinarians to the Wild Land, where there was a sufficiently large warehouse of vibranium to create a portal. When Ka-Zar managed to repel the attack, Klo fled to the Shinarian dimension, but, finding nothing significant there, returned to Earth ^[9] .

Having passed through the Nexus, Clough ended up in Florida, where he stole the rod of the Molecular Man. Together with his new ally, he went to New York to take revenge on their common opponents, members of the Fantastic Four. He was stopped by the Impossible Man ^[10] .

When Clough discovered that his strength was running low, he made a plan for his recovery. After allowing a small gang of Thunderbolts to attack himself in the central park, he fell into a coma, after which Black Panther was supposed to take him to Wakanda. Thanks to the Black Panther, Cloe managed to regain his strength, however, as soon as he tried to destroy the Avengers and the Black Panther with a powerful charge, the latter turned his attack against himself ^[11] . From Claw there was only a sound claw, which was handed over to the PEGAS Project. In Marvel Two-in-One # 57-58 (November - December 1979), Clau managed to return thanks to Solar, but both were stopped by a group of heroes, which also included: Creature, Quasar, Giant and Aquarius ^[12] .

Then Clos fought the Creature, Ka-Zar, and the American Eagle ^[13] .

Clough contacted Dazzling and said not to trust the PEGAS Project. When Blinding passed by his cell, Ulysses managed to convince her that she was being tortured and she, fighting off the guards, freed him. She managed to turn a live sound into light, thereby absorbing Clough ^[14] . During a limited series of Secret Wars , Dr. Doom discovered his energy. The Duma managed to restore Kloe's body, but the loss of his physical form seriously affected him: he went crazy and constantly repeated what he heard, choosing rhymes for words. After that, Doom began to cut Clau into pieces in order to pick up the frequency for the Galactus ship. When only a head was left of Ulysses, Doom managed to get close to Galactus and take away his strength. However, when the essence of the Otherworld was transferred to his body, Cloe persuaded the Duma to give him part of the received forces and entered into battle with all the Avengers. They were defeated by Captain America . The other world returned everyone to Earth, and Cloe's mind began to slowly recover ^[15] .

Clau fought against Daredevil and Vision before joining the Horrific Four of the Sorcerer . The team attacked the Fantastic Four when superheroes tried to find the reason for the exacerbation of Human Torch abilities. Clough threw the Creature into a cosmic radiation machine that turned Ben Grimm back into a human being. Subsequently, both teams were captured by Observer-Renegade Aron, who returned Clau and his comrades to prison when the Fantastic Four managed to escape ^[16] .

During the Acts of Vengeance storyline, Cloe was released by AIM. He was sent to capture the reformed supervillain Volcano, hoping to trap her lover, the Molecular Man. Cloe refused the fight when his prosthesis, with the help of which members of the AIM controlled it, was destroyed. Subsequently, he again tried to take revenge on the Black Panther, but he turned for help to the Fantastic Four, which helped him defeat Clos. Dr. Demonicus freed Clos from the Wakanda prison, who invited him to join his squad of Demon defenders. However, Clough betrayed them and helped the West Coast Avengers stop them. He later joined the Masters of Evil Justin Hammer and fought the Thunderbolts several times. Some time later, Clos arrived in Wakanda again to absorb the sound energy of an imminent explosion, which would make him stronger. With the help of a damaged shield, Captain America managed to defeat Clau, swallowing his attack ^[17] .

Clough faced Miss Marvel , who, absorbing his attacks, knocked down Clough's frequency and once again he was stuck in a sound claw. After some time, the Wizard managed to restore Claud from the torrent file and he again became a member of the Horrific Four ^[18] .

Later, Clough, as part of the Terrifying Four of the Sorcerer, assisted the Intelligentsia in capturing Mr. Fantastic ^[19] .

The chameleon took on the appearance of Clau to surprise the Intelligentsia by attacking the Sinister Six ^[20] .

Together with the Enchanter, he went to recruit Carnage . At the base, Carnage managed to break free, but Clau pacified him. Soon, the symbiote was separated from Cletus Cassidy and transferred to a new medium - the disabled scientist Karl Malus, under the control of the Wizard. A team of villains attacked the city hall, where they were met by the Excellent Spider-Man . Malus got out of control and stabbed Clau with a vibranium sword. Ulysses exploded, and the sound wave allowed Carnage to separate from Malus and return to Cassidy. However, Clough managed to gather his last strength and neutralize Carnage with lightning. According to Clough, now the energy of his body and his consciousness will diverge in space until they completely disappear ^[21] .

Kloe managed to survive, ^[22] however, he was soon captured by S.H.I.Tom ^[23] .

Claw has superhuman strength (450 KG) and durability. The prosthesis, which he has instead of his right wrist, is a sonic weapon capable of transforming ambient sound to perform a series of functions, including designing a large volume of sound waves, as well as creating power explosions. The sound convector was developed by Clough and later improved by AIM scientists and technical staff. Clos can also sense his surroundings using sonar. When he fought Volkana in an attempt to abduct the Molecular Man, he demonstrated the ability to create a “cohesive sound”. It was a crushing design that absorbed the surrounding noise to increase its size and strength.

Clough's body is a stable energy that has mass and intelligence. This deprives Ulysses of human needs. In the case of Clough's dismemberment, he will not feel pain. Separated parts of the body then fuse together. It is resistant to telepathy and can grow, absorbing ambient sound and merge with other types of matter. Claw is able to teleport, scattering his body and reassembling it.

Ulysses Clough received his doctorate in physics and is an expert in physics.

JLA / Avengers

In the latest issue, Cloe is among the enslaved villains who defended the Krona Citadel, and is defeated by Black Lightning ^[24] .

Marvel Zombies

Cloe contracted the virus from Mr. Fantastic's zombies, who bit him in the stomach. He appears in Marvel Zombies: Dead Days and the Ultimate Fantastic Four , battling the Fantastic Four zombies and the Ultimate Fantastic Four. In the end, he fails when the zombie Human Torch cuts off his hand with a prosthesis.

Heroes Reborn

In the Heroes Reborn universe, created by Franklin Richards, Clough appears as a member of the Lords of Evil Loki ^[25] .

Cinema

• Ulysses Clough appears in the movie “ Avengers: Age of Ultron ” in 2015, where Andy Serkis performed his role ^[2] . In the film, he appears as an arms dealer, not possessing superpowers. Ulysses Clough knew Tony Stark before the events of the movie Iron Man . He managed to steal a large amount of vibranium from Wakanda. Ultron buys from him a vibranium for his own interests, however, when Clough notes the similarities between him and Stark, he furiously cuts off his left forearm. During the battle of the Avengers with Ultron, the Scarlet Witch and Mercury , the wounded and enraged Clos orders his people to kill everyone.
• Serkis repeated the role of Cloe in the movie " Black Panther " in 2018 ^[28] . In the story, he replaced his lost arm with a high-tech prosthesis. Together with Killmonger, he stole a Wakandan artifact from a museum and tried to sell it to Everett Ross, but he is caught by the Black Panther. However, he managed to escape with the help of Killmonger, who later kills Kloe, revealing that he is Wakan and brings his body to Wakanda.
