Proverbs of the Russian people . A collection of proverbs , sayings , sayings , sayings, clean words , riddles , beliefs and so on. - one of the largest literary sources of Russian proverbs and sayings [1] [2] , compiled by V. I. Dahl in the middle of the XIX century. Contains 30,130 proverbs [3] , sayings and well-aimed words on 178 topics. About 6 thousand proverbs were taken from the Complete collection of Russian proverbs and sayings by D. M. Knyazhevich (1822), Russian folk proverbs and the parable of I. M. Snegirev (1848) [4] . All proverbs of the collection are included in the Dahl Dictionary [3] .

In 1853, the collection was submitted to the Academy of Sciences . Two reviews followed: positive from academician A. Kh. Vostokov and sharply negative from academician proto-priest V. S. Kochetov [5] . Only in March 1862, at the time of the public upsurge and weakening of censorship [6] , did N. P. Gilyarov-Platonov give permission to print [4] . On the cover page is the dictum “Proverb of the Unconvicted.”
