The belt is an isthmus in the central part of Sakhalin Island . It connects its southern part (the so-called “tail”) with the rest of the island [1] . In the west it is washed by the Sea of Japan , in the east - by the Sea of Okhotsk . It is the bottleneck of the island with a minimum width of about 26–27 km [2] .
Feature
The isthmus, like the entire island of Sakhalin , is a fairly earthquake-prone area with a potential earthquake strength in this region ranging from 5.3 to 6.3 points [1] . In terms of topography, the Isthmus Belts occupy hills and hills, which have small heights. The eastern part of the isthmus is occupied by the steep ridge Zhdanko (the maximum height is the town of Zhdanko - 681 m VUM), which received the status of a natural monument in 1988 [3] . To the south of it, the South Reed Ridge rises to a height of 1021 m. The highest mountain of Sakhalin south of the Belt Peninsula is Pushkinskaya Mountain (1047 m VUM). The Chekhov Peak (1045 m VUM), located 15 km north-west of the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , is also distinguished [4] . The isthmus plays an important role in the delimitation of the floristic spaces of the island: it separates spruce forests from fir-trees [5] [6] .
