SUISA

SUISA ("SUISse Auteurs") is a copyright society of Swiss songwriters, composers and music publishers. The company carries out collective management of rights for its members by collecting royalties (if their music is performed publicly, transmitted or used) and the payment of royalties.

The chairman of the company is Xavier Dayer [1] , with an office in Zurich .

SUISA was created in 1923. At that time, more than 30,000 composers [2] , songwriters and music publishers from Switzerland and Liechtenstein were united in the SUISA society. Thanks to contracts with foreign partners, SUISA currently represents the interests of about two million musicians.

Activities

SUISA represents the copyright of its members and members of partner organizations, provides members of the community with adequate compensation for the use of their works. SUISA tracks copyright in musical works in film and television. Copyright tracking in opera productions and musicals is carried out with the partner organization Société Suisse des Auteurs (SSA).

Each composer, songwriter or music publisher can become a member of SUISA. By mutual agreement, the company will charge a fee to users on behalf of the authors.

Copyright includes a fee for private copying of music; since 1993, collection has also been carried out for empty storage media (tapes, CDs and DVDs). SUISA administration costs account for 11.95 percent of the fees, and a fee of 10 percent is taken for blank media. SUISA is controlled by the Intellectual Property Institute (IGE) of Switzerland.

Criticism

The work of society is criticized. The fees themselves are criticized because they represent a multiple burden for consumers who already pay the fees when they purchase music or films. In addition, the collection applied to various storage technologies varies greatly depending on whether it is flash memory or hard disks, etc. [3] In response to criticism, SUISA reduced fees on flash memory to 4GB to 75 percent [4] . The Consumer Rights Protection Organization welcomed the move, but called for further consideration of all allegations against the public [5] .
