The East Euphrates River flows through the valley. From the south it is limited by the Sharian-dag ridge.
Since ancient times, the valley has been densely populated by the Armenian population. In the XVIII century, there were more than 360 Armenian villages. Subsequently, as a result of the policy of the Ottoman Empire, the majority of the Armenian population left the valley.
The territory of the Alashkert Valley was repeatedly occupied by Russian troops during the Russian-Turkish wars , but later returned to Turkey.
