The next parliamentary elections in Iran were held on February 26, 2016. In addition to the lower house of parliament ( Islamic Advisory Council - Mejlis), an upper house was elected - the Council of Experts . The Council of Experts consists of 86 Sharia scholars, theologians, elected for a period of 8 years by direct voting of citizens. The Council of Experts elects from its composition the head of state - the life leader and spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. [1] . Mejlis consists of 290 deputies. [2]

Election Background
More than 6 thousand candidates participated in the elections. The age limit in the elections is 18 years; about 55 million Iranians have the right to take part in them. Iranian liberals Mohammad Khatami and Mir-Hossein Mousavi , as well as the grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini Hassan, were excluded from the election process [2] . The elections were held against the backdrop of lifting and lifting sanctions from Iran , which can be considered a major success for the incumbent Iranian president Hassan Rouhani and the start of Iranian oil exports to Europe [2] .
