Biography

Charles Best was born on February 27, 1899 in West Pembroke. Shortly after birth, he left the United States and moved to Canada, to the city of Toronto, and devoted the rest of his life to this city. In 1916, at the age of 17, he entered the University of Toronto , where he graduated in 1921, but there was not enough diploma, then he defended his bachelor 's degree in 1921, his master's degree in 1922, and his medical doctor in 1925. As a student at the University of Toronto, from 1920 to 1921 he worked at the Department of Physiology, in 1929 he became the head of this department and professor at the University of Toronto and worked until 1941. In 1923, together with F. G. Bunting at the University of Toronto, he created an institute named after the names of two biologists, in which from 1923 to 1941 he held the position of assistant professor of medical research, and from 1941 to 1978 he was director of the department of medical research. During World War II, he led the Royal Canadian Volunteer Marine Reserve Surgery Service and the Royal Canadian Navy Medical Research Unit.

Charles Best died March 31, 1978 in Toronto.

Scientific work

The main scientific works are devoted to the metabolism and physiology of hormones. His scientific work contributed to the development of the physiological foundations of medicine.

  • 1922 - together with J. McLeod and F.G. Bunting, he performed work on the production of pancreatic hormone - insulin and developed a method for treating diabetes with this hormone.
