Overview
The city of Odessa and its history are reflected on postage stamps and other philatelic materials of the pre-revolutionary time, the Soviet Union and independent Ukraine .
The USSR and Ukraine Post issued a lot of postage stamps , artistic labeled and unmarked postal envelopes and one-sided postcards with the original stamp , the subject of which was connected with Odessa.
In 1992-1994, pharmacies were used in the postal system of the city.
Collection materials on Odessa topics also include various calendar , franking and special postmarks .
Odessa Post History
January 13, 1879 in the Odessa district of the Kherson province opened zemstvo post . Mail was forwarded from Odessa to the towns of the county twice a week. January 1, 1881 the work of the Zemstvo mail was discontinued, but resumed in 1888, while the forwarding of private correspondence became free [1] .
Postage Stamps
Pre-Revolutionary Period
To pay for the delivery of private correspondence, zemstvo postage stamps of the Odessa district of the Kherson province were issued; denominations of stamps - 2 kopecks for paying for sending parcels and 5 kopecks for simple letters . The stamps depict the provincial and county coats of arms [1] .
The Period of the Ukrainian Power
In August 1918, the administration of the Ukrainian State decided to print on the stamps of the Russian Empire from its own stocks a control sign - the trident of St. Volodymyr . It was impossible to do this centrally in a civil war . Therefore, overprints were applied by local authorities simultaneously in all postal districts, including the Odessa postal district.
Stamps of the Polish office in Odessa
In 1919, the Polish office in Odessa issued special postage stamps to pay for the forwarded correspondence, which was an overprint of the word "Odessa" ("Odessa") on Polish postage stamps [2] .
Soviet period
Odessa is devoted to a number of postage stamps of the USSR .
One of the stamps, published in March 1944 in the series “ Hero Cities ”, depicts the medal “For the Defense of Odessa” , established by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on December 22, 1942 ( TsFA [ ITC “Marka” ] No. 885) . The 1961 postage stamp from the series “The Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”, dedicated to the defense of Odessa in 1941, depicts an attacking sailor ( TsFA [ ITC “Marka” ] No. 2612) . The 20th anniversary of the liberation of Odessa was dedicated to the 1964 stamp with the image of a sailor with a gun on the background of the lighthouse of the Odessa port ( TsFA [ ITC Marka ] No. 3024) . In December 1965, in the series “Heroes of the Soviet Union”, a postage stamp was published depicting the defense of Odessa, the modern look of the port and the Zolotaya Zvezda medal ( TsFA [ ITC Marka ] No. 3295) [3] .

One of the postage stamps ( TsFA [ ITC “Marka” ] No. 4330) in a 1974 series dedicated to the artist I.K. Aivazovsky depicts a reproduction of his painting “View of Odessa on a Moonlit Night” (1846) [4] .

Pharmacies
In 1992-1994, in connection with the transition to a new currency ( Carbovans ) and a constant increase in shipping tariffs , the Odessa post office used its own pharmacies.
Post Art Envelopes
During the years of Soviet power and Ukrainian independence, in total, and as of 2015, was released at least? Labeled and unlabelled art envelopes with Odessa plots, including? envelopes of the USSR and? - Ukraine.
Envelopes depict monuments and architecture of Odessa . Some envelopes are dedicated to the anniversaries of Odessa enterprises and organizations. Another topic of the envelopes was the current events held in the city - philatelic exhibitions, sports competitions, cultural festivals.
