Life Story
The future saint was born in Mesopotamia . His parents Elijah and Martha were Christians . Life narrates that for a long time the Lord did not give them a child. Martha prayed a lot to God for childbearing, promising to devote her child to the service of God. The prayer was heard: she had a son.
Until the age of five, the boy did not have a name, because his parents wanted the god-born God to give birth to a name for himself. The name of the youth was named the abbot of the monastery , where his parents brought him: the abbot, taking one of the liturgical books, straightened it in the words of the prophet Daniel ; the name of the prophet was called the future ascetic.
Twelve years old, leaving his father's house, he came to the monastic cloister, where he was received by a novice. One day the igumen went to Antioch on business, taking Daniel with him. On the way, they passed by the place where the Monk Simeon the Stylite labored on a high pillar. Daniel, seeing the Stylite, in prayer undergone deprivation and bad weather, burned with the desire to fight the same way. With the blessing of St. Simeon, Daniel retired to the outskirts of Constantinople , in Thrace , settling on the site of an abandoned pagan temple , where he had to endure many demonic temptations.
Having raised a high pillar, Daniel spent many years on it in a spiritual feat. Life reports that Daniel was honored by God the gift of miracles and healing. The place of his retreat began to attract pilgrims and sufferers who turned to him for help. Toward the end of his life, Daniel was ordained to the presbyters (the Patriarch of Constantinople performed the consecration , and Daniel himself did not even descend from the pillar).
Daniel died on December 11 in 489 or 490, having spent more than 30 years on the pole.
