In December 2013, Amina Gourab-Fakim filed a complaint with the Commission for Equal Opportunities of the Mauritian Language, alleging religious discrimination when considering her application for the Vice-Rector of the University of Mauritius. The investigation found that this was not the case, but noted shortcomings in the selection process. The report cited the lack of clear criteria and sheets for evaluating candidates.
As President
Gurib-Fakim is the first woman elected president of Mauritius and is the third woman to be the head of the state of Mauritius after Elizabeth II and Monique Osan-Belpo , who was acting president in 2012 after the resignation of President Anirud Jagnoth and in 2015 after the resignation of Rajkesvur Purriaga .
In December 2014, she was elected presidential candidate from the Alliance Lepep. After Rajkesvour Purriag resigned on May 29, 2015 , Prime Minister Anirud Jagnot and opposition leader Paul Beranger welcomed her nomination, which was unanimously approved at the next ballot in the National Assembly.
Since 2016, she has been criticized for collaborating with the Angolan businessman Sobrinju, who was accused by the authorities of Angola and Portugal of financial fraud. She was on the board of trustees of the PEI NGO, which was financed by Sobrinju. In April 2017 she was forced to leave all posts in PEI [3] .
In early March, it became aware of major purchases made by Gurib-Fakim from the PEI charity bank card for personal needs. On March 9, 2018, government representatives announced the imminent resignation of the president, which would enter into force on March 12 . However, on March 14, 2018, the office of the president announced that Amina Gourab-Fakim refused to leave the presidency, all the money spent was offset, the bank card was inadvertently confused, since the president had 2 identical cards from the same bank. On March 16, Gourib-Faqim formed a commission to investigate the incident and the activities of Sobrinju companies operating in Mauritius [3] .
Before the threat of impeachment, she was forced to resign on March 23, 2018.
