Ermistu [3] [1] ( est. Ermistu järv ; outdated. Hermes [4] , Hermes [5] , Ermistu-järv [6] ) is a lake in southwestern Estonia , administratively refers to the village of Ermistu in Tystamaa parish, Pärnumaa [7] .

Location
On the eastern shore of the lake is the village of Ermista, on the south - the village of Tystamaa [7] .
The water area of the reservoir is part of the Tyhela-Ermistu natural area protected by the state ( est. Tõhela-Ermistu hoiuala ) [8] .
Description
The total area of the lake is 454.3 hectares (9th place among the largest lakes in Estonia), the water surface area is 449.5 hectares, the area of 14 islands on the lake is 4.8 hectares. The length of the reservoir is 4070 m, width is 1750 m. The greatest depth is 2.9 m, the average depth is 1.3 m. The coastline is 21 779 m. The catchment area is 32.3 km². Water is exchanged 2 times a year.
Ermistu is a lake with moderately hard stratified water (type 2 according to the WFD). For limnological typology adopted in Estonia, the lake is saprophytic.
The shores of the lake are low, slightly dissected, silty or peaty. The east coast is sandy in some places. The bottom of the lake on the east coast is sandy, in the northern part it is rocky, in the central part it is clayey, in other places it is muddy (in the southwestern part the thickness of the mud layer reaches 12 m). In the lake there are about 6 million m3 of sapropel (fertilizers and medicinal mud). The depth of the lake increases gradually. The deepest parts of the reservoir are western and eastern. On the lake numerous peat islands were formed. In the northern part of Ermistu lies Kamenny Island (Kivissaar). Tõstama jõgi flows out of the southern tip of the lake.
The water in the lake changes color from yellow to greenish-yellow, transparency - 0.8-2.5 m. In summer, the water heats up and mixes well, there may be oxygen deficiency in winter.
The lake is rich in fish: bream , pike , perch , roach , white bream , tench , crucian carp , eel , ide , ruff . Ermistu is home to many species of birds, which include, in particular, the common tern , mallard , teal-whistle , tufted duck , large merganser and medium , mute swan .
On the lake guarded place of residence of the golden eagle.
