Biography

Andras Törö was born on July 10, 1940 in Budapest . He began to actively engage in rowing in his early childhood, was trained in the capital's sports club "Budapest Honved".

The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in 1960, when he joined the main team of the Hungarian national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was granted the right to defend the honor of the country at the Summer Olympics in Rome . Together with his partner Imre Farkas in twos, he took the third place in a thousand meters and thus won the bronze Olympic medal, losing only to crews from the USSR and Italy.

Being one of the leaders of the rowing team of Hungary, he successfully qualified for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo - this time he started in the standings of single canoes at a distance of 1000 meters and showed the fourth result in the final race, not reaching the prize positions. During the Olympics, Törö left the location of the Hungarian national team and fled to the United States.

After settling in America, Töre graduated from the University of Michigan , after which for many years he worked as a water transport engineer and ship architect. However, he did not leave rowing, so in 1969 he became the champion of the USA among single and double canoes. When he was given American citizenship in 1971, he was given the opportunity to join the American Olympic team. He represented the United States at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , where he started alone at a thousand meters, and at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , where he played in twos at a thousand meters in a pair with Chuck Lida - in both cases, however, he was far away from victory, managed to reach only consolation rounds.
