Biography

The son of Prince Nikolai Leonidovich Obolensky and Princess Natalya Stepanovna, nee Sollogub.

He spent his childhood in St. Petersburg, in 1918 he emigrated with his family to Ukraine, then through Constantinople to France. He graduated from the Lyceum in Nice, then the Saint-Cyr Military School, where he was admitted, as an exception, among ten Russian cadets. In 1925 he was released as a “second lieutenant” [1] to the Foreign Legion . He soon retired and graduated from the Free School of Political Science in 1927, after which he worked as an economist at an insurance company.

During World War II, the prince, who did not accept French citizenship, volunteered for the 21st March Regiment of the Foreign Legion, was wounded and spent eight months in captivity. After the war he was awarded the Military Cross , and in 1965, the Legion of Honor .

As a writer, he did not achieve much success. He made his debut in the collection of poems "The Association of Young Figures of Russian Art and Science", published in Paris in 1947. His poems were also published as part of the poetry anthology Relay Relay (Paris, 1949). Poems and prose were published in the newspaper Russian Thought , magazines Novoselye, Renaissance , New Journal and other publications. Contrary to the assertion of the Biographical Dictionary "Russian Abroad in France (1919-2000)", he did not publish separate collections of his poems [2] . The diary, which the prince kept in 1919, was published in 2003 in St. Petersburg.

For more than 40 years he was engaged in genealogical and historical research of the Obolensky clan. He participated in the preparation of the Genealogy of the Princes of Obolensky by N. D. Pleshko, published in 1959, and published additions to it (1976). Since 1965, a member of the board of the Society of Adherents of Russian Military Antiquities.
