Production

Producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy began production of the high-budget adaptation of Big and Good Giant in 1991, and set up a project with Paramount Pictures [2] . A married couple of scriptwriters, Robin Svaykord and Nicholas Kazan , wrote the adaptation script in 1998, Robin Williams was considered for the main role [3] . By 2001, the script was rewritten by Gwyn Lurie, who was greeted with positive reviews from the Dahl estate [11] .

In September 2011, DreamWorks announced that they had received the rights to film adaptation of the book; Kennedy and Marshall will be producers, and screenwriter Melissa Matheson will adapt the story. [12] In April 2014, it was announced that Steven Spielberg would direct the film, starting filming in 2015, and DreamWorks would release it in 2016. [13] John Madden was previously appointed director, but is now listed as an executive producer along with Michael Siegel. [14] Spielberg stated: “The“ big and kind giant ”has fascinated families and their children for more than three decades. It is a great honor for us that Roald Dahl’s estate entrusted us with this classic story. ” [15] In March 2015, Walden Media agreed to co-finance and co-produce the film. [16] Sam Mercer will also be the producer of the film. [10] In April 2015, Walt Disney Studios , which was already under an agreement to distribute the film through its Touchstone Pictures banner, joined the production as a co-producer and co-financier, and transferred the film from Touchstone to Walt Disney Pictures instead. [17] Consequently, “The Great and Good Giant” is Spielberg’s first film shot under the Disney brand; although he had previously produced several studio films. [18] In addition, DreamWorks will not be featured either in the film or in the marketing, but will instead be represented by Spielberg's production company, Amblin Entertainment . [19]

Casting

On October 27, 2014, Mark Rylans was taken in the lead role in the film [7] . Spielberg commented on this choice: “Mark Rylance is a transformational actor. I am very pleased and excited that Mark will go on this journey with us to the Land of Giants. Everything in his career is still a courageous choice, and I am flattered that he chose the “Big and Good Giant” as his next appearance on the big screen. ” [20] [21] Rylance played the role of the character through motion capture technology, a process he called “liberating.” [22]

In mid-November 2014, it was reported that a ten-year-old Lower Peover student, Ruby Barnhill, was auditioning for a role in the film, and she had to learn six pages of dialogue in preparation for the possible role of orphaned Sophie. [23] After a long search for the role of Sophie on December 16, the director took 10-year-old Barnhill for this role, to which she said: "I am incredibly lucky and I'm so happy." Spielberg said they "discovered the wonderful Sophie at Ruby Barnhill." [8]

Bill Hader was approved for an indefinite role in the film on March 27, 2015. Subsequently, it became known that his character would be a giant named Krovushki. [10]

Filming

The filming period began on March 23, 2015 in Vancouver [9] [24] and ended on June 12, 2015. [25] Weta Digital was involved in creating the visual effects of the film. [26]
