Biography
Born in 1865 in Newark, New Jersey.
He studied at the New York League of Art Students and at the Cooper Union .
From 1885 to 1890, Flanagan was a studio assistant for Augustus Saint-Godens , worked with him in several major projects. In his honor, Flanagan performed in 1924 a bust that exists in several copies located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the National Gallery of Art, and New York University .
Flanagan was the author of a 25-cent US coin depicting George Washington, issued in 1932. [2] The design of the coin was preserved until 1998.
Among the many medals developed by Flanagan are the official medal of the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition of 1915; Verdun Medal in memory of the battle of Verdun in World War I; Hudson-Fulton Celebration Anniversary Celebration and others.
In 1911, he was elected to the National Academy of Design as an associate member, becoming a full member in 1928. Flanagan was a member of the Society of Medalists , created in the USA in 1930; American Numismatic Society ( Eng. American Numismatic Society ), National Society of Sculptors . In 1927 he was awarded the Legion of Honor. [3]
He died on March 28, 1952 in New York.
