Free- style wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1936 Olympic Games in the lightest weight (up to 56 kilograms) were held in Berlin from 2 to 5 August 1936 in the German Hall.
The tournament was held on the system with the accrual of penalty points. Penalty points were not accrued for a clear victory, a wrestler received one penalty point for a victory on points, two penalty points for a loss on points with a score of 2-1, three penalty points for a loss with a score of 3-0 or a net defeat. The wrestler, who collected five penalty points, was eliminated from the tournament. The circle in which the number of remaining wrestlers became less than or equal to the number of prizes was declared final, and the wrestlers who reached the final held meetings with each other. In case they had already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. Fight under the rules of the tournament lasted 15 minutes.
In the bantamies fought 14 participants. There was a big competition in weight: such athletes as Eden Zombori , the current Olympic vice-champion, European champion of 1931 and 1934, Marcello Nicezola , the current Olympic vice-champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, and European champion of 1935 in free-style wrestling, Aatos Yaskari is a bronze medalist of previous games, Herman Tuwesson is a three-time European champion in Greco-Roman wrestling and a two-time European medalist in freestyle wrestling.
And the competition really took place in a tense struggle. All predictable challengers made their way to the final by meeting each other, losing and winning. After the fifth round, one of the recognized wrestlers, Eden Zombori, remained. In the final, he was joined by a little-known American Ross Flood in Europe. Zombori did not leave Flood any chance in the final. The bronze medal was awarded to Johannes Herbert who retired in the fifth round, who had one penalty point less than Herman Tuwesson who also retired in the fifth round. At the same time, Thuvesson defeated Herbert and even the future champion Zombori in the course of the tournament, but remained below the line of prize winners.
