Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1936 Olympic Heavyweight Championship (over 87 kilograms) took place in Berlin from August 6 to 9, 1936 in the German Hall.
The tournament was held according to the system with the accrual of penalty points. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, a fighter received one penalty point for a victory in points, two penalty points for a defeat in points 2–1, and three penalty points for a defeat with a score of 3–0. The wrestler who scored five penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The circle in which the number of remaining wrestlers became less than or equal to the number of prizes was declared final, and the wrestlers who reached the final held meetings among themselves. If they have already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. The battle according to the tournament regulations lasted 20 minutes.
In heavy weight 12 participants fought. The favorite of the competition was the German wrestler Kurt Hornfisher , European champion 1933-1935 and it was expected that he would win the Olympics, especially in his native walls. He really made it to the finals, where Estonian Christian Palusalu , who was hardly known in the international arena, blocked his path (he only performed at the European Championship, where he was fourth). Palusalu defeated Hornfisher by unanimous decision, which brought Hornfisher three penalties, which in total with the existing ones, amounted to five. Thus, Swede Jun Nyuman , who missed the first final match with three penalty points, had no one to fight with, since he had already met and lost Palusalu - and due to this defeat, Nyuman remained second, Palusalu became the Olympic champion, and Hornfisher remained with "Bronze".
Christian Palusalu won the second Olympic gold medal (he had won the freestyle wrestling before), and this is the only heavyweight event in the history of the Olympic wrestling.
