History
In 1963, British Nuclear Design & Construction (BNDC) began construction of a nuclear power plant, with the participation of English Electric , Babcock International Group and Taylor Woodrow Construction. The reactors were designed by The Nuclear Power Group (TNPG), and the turbines were English Electric. It was the second nuclear power plant built in Wales, after the Trosfinidd NPP . Following the closure of the latter in 1991, Wilf's Nuclear Power Plant remained the only nuclear power plant in Wales .
Wilf NPP had two nuclear reactors of the Magnox type, with a capacity of 490 MW each, which began to operate in 1971.
The construction of the second nuclear power plant (Wylfa B) was planned, in particular to meet the needs of the aluminum plant in Holyhead . However, the aluminum plant was closed on September 30, 2009. The construction of the second nuclear power plant was postponed indefinitely. Nevertheless, Wilf's nuclear power plant continued to provide employment for the local population and the production of electricity north of Wales. In March 2006, the local Council supported the extension of the service life of the Wilf A plant and the construction of the Wilf B plant, citing potential job losses in the region.
On October 18, 2010, the British government announced that Wilf is one of eight facilities suitable for the construction of a future nuclear power plant [1] .
However, on April 27, 2012, reactor number 2 at Wilf NPP was shut down after 41 years of operation. Reactor No. 1 was shut down on December 30, 2015, and the nuclear power plant was completely decommissioned.
