Biography

Gunnar Utterberg was born on November 28, 1942 in Jönköping . He began to actively engage in rowing from early childhood, was trained at the local canoe club Jönköpings Kanotklubb.

He achieved the greatest success at the adult international level in 1964, when he got into the main team of the Swedish national team and thanks to a series of successful performances he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Tokyo Summer Olympics . In twos at a thousand meters, along with teammate Sven-Olov, Schedelius overtook all his rivals and thereby won the Olympic gold medal. In addition, he started in fours at a thousand meters, but finished only fifth in the final race, not reaching the prize positions a little.

In 1967, Utterberg visited the European Championships in Duisburg, Germany, from where he brought two silver dignity awards won in the standings of double kayaks at distances of 1000 and 10000 meters. Being one of the leaders of the rowing team of Sweden, he successfully qualified for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , however, he could not repeat the success of four years ago, together with Lars Andersson he showed the fifth result in a thousand meters in the final.

After the Mexican Olympics, Gunnar Utterberg remained in the main squad of the Swedish national team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1969, he performed at the European Championship in Moscow, where he became the silver medalist in the kilometer-long kayak-two. A year later, he went to represent the country at the World Cup in Copenhagen and received bronze in fours on ten kilometers. Qualified for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich - among the four-seater crews at a distance of 1000 meters took the eighth place in the final. Soon after the end of these competitions, he decided to end the career of a professional athlete, giving way to young Swedish rowers in the national team.
