Heim ins Reich ( German ; “Reich is our home” , “Home to the Reich” ) is the political doctrine and system of measures proclaimed by Hitler in 1938, designed to unite the German people and strengthen the national identity of all Volksdeutsche who lived outside the Third Reich . This socio-political attitude was aimed once again to solve the German question and strengthen pan-Germanism , relying on ideological principles and new methods of conducting foreign and domestic policies inherent in fascist Germany. The main population groups to which the Heim ins Reich policy was oriented were the Germans and the Volksdeutsche of Austria , a number of western regions of Poland ( Silesia ), Sudeten ( Sudeten Germans ) and territories seized from Germany as a result of the Treaty of Versailles .
The goal of the program was to bring back members of the German diasporas back to Germany.
The Heim ins Reich policy was handled by the Volkswagen Deutsche Mittelshtelle department, which in 1941 became one of the SS departments.
