History
PTNL were created in May 2002 by the United Nations , before the new state gained independence, in order to ensure security and maintain law and order throughout the country, as well as to ensure the rapid development of reliable, professional and impartial police. Recruitment was carried out at the beginning of 2000 , basic training began on March 27, 2000 , under the auspices of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNAMET). On August 10, 2001 , the East Timor Police was formally established. It was formally established. Later it began to be called the Timor-Leste police, and after a while it was again renamed the national police of Timor-Leste.
On May 20, 2002, an agreement was signed on the transfer of powers from the civilian police to the PTNL. December 10, 2003 PTNL finally gained control over the whole country.
There are at least three special units of the PNTL: a police reserve group (formerly the Rapid Deployment Service); Border Patrol ( Unidade de Patrulhamento de Fronteiras , UPF ); rapid response team ( UIR ). [one]
