Biography

Emanuel Stein was born in Polish Bialystok in July 1934 in the family of Julia Flyaum, a famous actress and singer of Jewish songs, and Alexei Stein, a Jewish actor and director. Together with his parents, he fled from the Nazis to the Soviet Union in 1940, returned to Warsaw in 1961, where he taught Russian literature at the University of Warsaw . He was the champion of Poland in chess . He spent one year in a Polish prison for distributing truthful information about the history of the Katyn massacre , spent some time in the same prison cell with E. Koch . In 1968 he fled to the West . In the USA, he taught at Yale University , studied and collected Russian emigrant poetry, published a number of bibliographies , poetry collections, and hundreds of periodical articles.
