“The Tale ...” tells of a king who reigned in complete prosperity until he fell under the influence of the “synclite” and “fourteen sorcerers,” whose slander “confused the king with people, and people with the king” [1] . This was followed by a punishment from above: enemies were sent to the kingdom, who besieged the "reigning city". They managed to regain their former prosperity only after the tsar repented and betrayed the "sorcerers" to the fire.
"The Tale ..." has survived to this day on a single list [2] [3] as part of a collection, filigree on paper which date back to the early 1620s [3] . The tsar mentioned in the story is not Ivan the Terrible, as some scholars thought [4] , but, most likely, Vasily Shuisky : the text of the work hints that he was chosen as kingdom (“ Tsar, remember, I’ve chosen the king, and most glorious I have created ” [1] ). Repeated references to the king’s connection with the “sorcerers” also suggest his identity with Vasily Shuisky, who, according to the testimonies of I. A. Khvorostinin and Ivan Timofeev , often resorted to witchcraft [5] .
In turn, a description of the siege of the “reigning city” and a mention of the fact that the soldiers sent by the king (together with his “with snakes ”) went over to the side of the enemies, recalls the details of the siege of Moscow by the troops of I. I. Bolotnikov and False Dmitry II . The similarity of situations can also be seen in the fact that the defectors were able to return with impunity when success came to the Tsar, as was the case when Prince MV Skopin-Shuisky liberated Moscow. These data allow us to conclude that the "Tale ..." could be created in March - July 1610 [6] .
