Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1936 Olympic lightweight championship (up to 66 kilograms) were held in Berlin from August 6 to 9, 1936 in the German Hall.

The tournament was held according to the system with the accrual of penalty points. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, a fighter received one penalty point for a victory in points, two penalty points for a defeat in points 2–1, and three penalty points for a defeat with a score of 3–0. The wrestler who scored five penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The circle in which the number of remaining wrestlers became less than or equal to the number of prizes was declared final, and the wrestlers who reached the final held meetings among themselves. If they have already met in preliminary meetings, such results were read out. The battle according to the tournament regulations lasted 20 minutes.

In lightweight 18 participants fought. A clear favorite of the 1935 European champion is Lauri Koskela . The silver medalist of previous games Abraham Kurland (being a Jew, missed these games) and European champion 1933 and 1934 Aarne Rainey (moved to featherweight) could also claim medals. Of the well-known competitors, Koskela was left with only the 1928 Olympic champion Voldemar Vyalya .

Lauri Koskela without a defeat passed the tournament, and became the champion of the games, without even participating in the final. And Voldemar Vyalya lost to Joseph Gerda in a meeting for “silver”
