Matvey Fedorovich Polynov (born February 25, 1956 [1] [2] , village of Old Potma , Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) [3] is a Russian historian , doctor of historical sciences , professor [K 1] of the Department of Contemporary History of Russia at the Institute of History of St. Petersburg University .

Biography
Born in the village of Old Potma [3] (now in the Krasnoslobodsky district of Mordovia ).
In 1980 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of History of the University of Leningrad [3] with a degree in history and teaching; in 1981-1984 - trainee researcher and graduate student of Leningrad State University in the department of the history of Soviet society [1] [2] .
In 1985-1995 he taught at the Leningrad Mechanical Institute (since 1992 - BSTU "Voenmekh") (assistant, then senior teacher, since 1992 - assistant professor ) [1] [2] .
In 1999 he graduated from the doctoral program in the Department of Contemporary History of St. Petersburg University [1] [2] . Since September 1999, he has been a professor at the Department of Russian History, and since 2001, a professor at the Department of Contemporary History of Russia, the Faculty of History (Institute of History), St. Petersburg University [3] . He prepared more than 10 lecture courses on the history of Russia of the 20th century, the socio-economic and political development of Russia in the second half of the 1980s - 1990s. In the sphere of his professional interests are the problems of Russia's foreign policy and national security in the 20th century, the history of industry, Russia's participation in world wars and local military conflicts, and the economic history of Russia in the 20th century. He also prepared special courses: “History of Perestroika in the USSR”, “Historical background of Perestroika in the USSR”, “Soviet Union from Brezhnev to Gorbachev: development, crisis, historical finale”, “USSR, Russia during the period of radical reforms. 1985-2000 ” [1] [2] [3]
Scientific activity
In 1984, he defended his Ph.D. thesis (“The growth of the cultural and technical level of the working class of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1959-1975; the supervisor of studies was Professor V. A. Ovsyankin [1] ), and in 1999, his doctoral dissertation (“ Russian workers in 1985— 1995. The main trends in social development [based on materials from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region] ”) [3] .
The main areas of research are the history of Russia of the XX — XXI centuries: the history of Russian industry, the problems of Russian foreign policy, the preconditions for perestroika in the USSR, the establishment of market relations in Russia in the 1990s, the socio-economic history of Russia in the second half of the XX — XXI centuries. [3]
Among his students are A. A. Andreev (dissertation on “Russia and Kazakhstan in the 1990s: experience of cooperation”), D. A. Gavrin (“Russian industry during the period of radical economic reforms in the 1990s” ), A. Yu. Komarkov (“Naval Lend-Lease for the USSR during the Great Patriotic War [1941-1945]”) and others.
He is the author of about 100 scientific papers in which a large number of archival materials, official documents and materials, data from periodic sources, and statistical materials were introduced into the scientific circulation.
