Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the dynasty that ruled in the Holy Roman Empire (1308–1313, 1346–1400, 1410–1437), the Czech Republic (1310–1437), Hungary (1387–1437) and Luxembourg , a branch of the Limburg (Arlon) house . The ancestor of the dynasty was the Duke of Limburg, Valeran III (1170-1226), who, thanks to his marriage to Countess of Luxembourg Ermezinda I (1186-1247), acquired the rights to Luxembourg. From his grandchildren, the sons of Henry V Belokuriy (1216–1271), Count of Luxembourg from 1247, two branches of the clan came - the imperial and the French.

Imperial Branch

The ancestor of the eldest branch was Count Henry VI (1250–1288), who unsuccessfully fought with the Dukes of Brabant for Limburg. His son Henry VII (1274–1313) became emperor of the Holy Roman Empire . The dynasty reached its greatest power under the grandson of Henry VII, Charles IV (1316–1378), the king of the Czech Republic (under the name Charles), and the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. This branch died away with the death in 1437 of Emperor Sigismund I.

French Branch

The Luxembourg Palace was built by Maria Medici on the site of the Parisian estate of the Duke of Pine-Luxembourg.

The youngest branch of the clan (Luxembourg-Linyi) came from the brother of Henry VI - Valeran I (d. 1288), Senor Linyi. This branch moved to France. Gradually, the French Luxembourgs for some time concentrated in their hands such counties as Saint-Paul , Brienne , Soissons , Marl . The oldest line of this kind died out at the beginning of the 15th century on Countess Jeanne de Ligny , wife of the Duke Antoine of Brabant . Three more branches of French Luxembourg, as will be shown below, existed until the turn of the XVI and XVII centuries.

Louis de Luxembourg , Count de Saint-Paul held the post of France’s constable , but was executed in 1475 on suspicion of having relations with the enemies of Louis XI . He left offspring from two marriages, with the French and Savoy princesses. His granddaughter, Maria de Luxembourg , widowed after the death of the Count of Savoy, married the Count of Vendome; their son was the first Duke of Vendome - the grandfather of Heinrich of Navarre .

In 1581, one of the descendants of the Luxembourg constable, Francois de Luxembourg-Linyi (d. 1613), was granted the title of Duke de Pinai, after the name of his estate in Champagne . This was caused by the fact that his wife was the sister of the French Queen Louise , that is, Luxembourg-Linyi was a brother-in-law to King Henry III . The only son of the Duke of Pine-Luxembourg survived him by only three years, after which the French aristocracy entered the struggle for the ducal title.

Favorite of Louis XIII , Charles de Liuin , arranged the marriage of the duke’s granddaughter with his younger brother, who on this occasion accepted the title of Duke of Luxembourg. Widowed, the duchess entered into a second marriage with the Earl of Clermont-Tonner, and their daughter, under pressure from a relative , the mother of the great Conde , was married to Earl Butville , whose heirs inherited the title of Duke of Pine-Luxembourg (despite the fact that the bride had an older brother and sister) .

Luxembourg Haver and Luxembourg-Martig

Countess Luxembourg-Le Havre's Egmont Palace in Brussels .

The youngest line of French Luxembourg came from the brother of the Luxembourg constable, who, like many in this family, reached the rank of bishop of Le Mans . From his eldest son came several generations of the lords de Fienne and the counts de Le Havre (van Haver) in Flanders . The last Countess de Le Havre from Luxembourg - the mother of the famous Lamoral Egmont , 1st Prince of Le Havre - built the elegant Egmont Palace in Brussels.

The youngest son of the bishop, François de Luxembourg, ruled Provence in the interests of his cousin Carl of Anjou , the last count of Provence. In his will, Charles refused Luxembourg the Viscountry of Martigues in Provence, which Henry IV raised to the status of a principality.

The son of the first Viscount, also named Francois, was in the service of the Duke of Savoy, his close relative; Charlotte de Bross took the wife, the dowry of which included the Pentèvre region in Brittany , as well as Chevreuse and Etampes . He had a daughter (behind Count Latremuem ) and two sons, who laid their heads in battles for the king.

The youngest of them had since 1569 the title of Peer of France and Duke of Pentyev . His only daughter was married to the 2nd Duke of Merker (a close relative of Gizov ); their daughter, the Duchess Pentyevre, is behind Cesar Vendomsky , who inherited Martigues, Pentevre and other possessions of the last Luxembourgs.
