Biography

Born August 19, 1921 . Since 1942, he lectured at Pithapur Raja State College in Kakinada .

In 1950, Rao became an employee of the Botanical Service of India, worked in its regional offices in Shillong and Pune . He studied the flora of the Eastern Himalayas, Northeast India, Western Ghats , and Eastern Ghats . Under his leadership, the first Indian expedition to Mount Cho-Oyu was carried out. He also participated in expeditions to Asia, conducted by the British Museum .

Since 1977 he worked at the University of Andhra , headed the Department of Botany.

The author of a number of monographs of flora of various regions of the state of Andhra Pradesh .

In 1971, R. S. Rao, V. Kh. Kapadiya, Sukh Dev and M. I. Ansari patented the use of Iphigenia stellata plants as a source of colchicine .

In 1984 he was awarded the Medal of Professor Panchanama Maheshwari of the Indian Botanical Society, in 1996 - the I.D. Tiaga Gold Medal of the Indian Angiosperms Taxonomy Association.

He died in New Delhi on February 23, 2015 .
