Petersburg Conventions ( 1772 , 1793 , 1795 , 1797 ), between Russia , Austria and Prussia on the divisions of the Commonwealth . According to the 1st section, Eastern Belarus departed to Russia with the cities of Gomel , Mogilyov , Vitebsk , Polotsk and the Polish part of Livonia . In 1793, Russia received a significant part of Belarus and Ukraine . According to the Petersburg Convention of 1795, Russia acquired lands located east of the line: r. Bug to Nemirov , Grodno , r. Neman , the border with East Prussia . The Petersburg Convention of 1797 completed the sections of the Commonwealth ; Polish King Stanislav Augustus abdicated the throne (Act 1795).
