Ausra (newspaper) is the first Lithuanian public literary newspaper “Aušra” (original title of Auszra , “Dawn”) [1] .

It was founded by a group of like-minded people led by Jonas Basanavičius , who was at first its editor. It was published monthly from February 1883 to June 1886 in Ragnit and Tilsit ( Prussia ), since Russia was banned from printing in Lithuanian in Latin, secretly transported to Lithuania and illegally distributed. Forty numbers came out. Due to the format and frequency per month, it is often called a magazine .

Edited the newspaper Jonas Basanavicius (Ivan Basanovich), Jurgis Mikshas , Jonas Slyupas , Martinas Jankus , Juozas Andziulaitis-Kalnenas .

The publication played an important role in the formation of the national identity of Lithuanians, the improvement of the Lithuanian literary language, and the development of Lithuanian literature . Patriotic poems on the historical destinies of Lithuania Maironis , Andrius Vistyalis , Xaveras Sakalauskas-Vanagelis , Pyatras Arminas-Trupinelis and others, preserved in manuscripts by writers of the previous generation Dionizas Poska , Valerionas Antasukasnakaszasnak , were published in Ausra literary articles by Mechislovas Davainis-Silvestraitis , Stanislovas Dagilis and other authors, as well as reviews and other materials.
