Kolymvari

Kolimvari ( Greek Κολυμβάρι , also known as Kolimbari , Greek Κολυμπάρι ) is a village in Greece in the north of Crete . It is located on the southern tip of the Rhodopos Peninsula on the coast of the Gulf of Chania in the Cretan Sea , 24 kilometers west of Chania . According to the Kallikratis program, since 2011, enters into the community (dim) of Platanias in the peripheral unit of Chania in the periphery of Crete [2] . The population of 1088 inhabitants was at the 2011 census [1] .

Kolymvari is the local center of trade and fishing. It does not have a sandy beach, and therefore is not as popular with tourists as the nearby resorts of Maleme and Platanias . Not far from the city is located the ancient monastery of Gonia .

At the beginning of the Turkish-Venetian war in 1645, a Turkish landing force landed here. During the Cretan uprising in 1897, an expeditionary corps commanded by Timoleon Vassos landed here, which led to the start of the First Greek-Turkish War .

The city has the Cretan Theological Academy , where the Pan-Orthodox Council was held in June 2016 [3] .

Economy

District Kolymvari is one of the centers of production of olive oil .
