Biography
Representative of the aristocratic family of Memo or Memmo, Dionisio was a member of the Order of the Holy Cross . His teachers were Juan Maria Marin, organist of the chapel of Martian , and Paul Hofheimer [1] , who was considered the greatest German organist.
After training, he became a singer in St. Mark's Cathedral under the direction of Pietro de Fossis . On September 22, 1507, he was appointed organist in the place of his deceased teacher, Marina. On January 12, 1511, he participated in the opening of the chapel of Federico II of Mantua as a performer on organ and harpsichord.
In September 1516 , leaving his place in St. Mark's Cathedral, he went to England with the support of the Ambassador of the Republic of Venice, Sebastiano Giustiniani , who introduced him to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey , Lord Chancellor of the State, and introduced at the court of Henry VIII , also a “musician,” and Queen Catherine of Aragon . As a result, he received liberation from the Order and was appointed priest at Saint-Pierre; he was also appointed confessor of the king and chief of the court musicians.
In 1525, Memmo became in danger, he was forced to leave England and went to Portugal . However, due to a shipwreck, he stayed in Spain , where, fulfilling a vow for saving his life, he served as an organist in Santiago de Compostela for a year. In 1539 , according to the testimony of Count de Villallon, he still served in the Cathedral of St. James .
After 1539, there is no evidence of Memmo.
