Content
Story
The era of the Restoration, that is, the turn of England in the middle of the XVII century into the Catholic-feudal bed, tyranny of kings and feudal whims of nobles. Among these highly planted figures, the figure of medic Robert Merivel ( Robert Downey Jr. ), selected by King Charles II for the role of the husband of his mistress Celia and the veterinarian of his curly spaniel, flashes .
Together with a beautiful, but not-so-distant wife and dog, a medical student yesterday receives both the estate and the staff of servants, and considerable maintenance. But after deviating from the harsh condition of the king: "No proximity - you are only the keeper", Robert is deprived of the king’s estate and mercy, and must again take up his craft.
Aesculapius leaves the courtyard and goes to a shelter for the insane, which is supervised by his university friend John Pearce (David Thewlis) , where he meets poor Irish Catherine ( Meg Ryan ). Miraculously cured, she gives birth to his daughter Margarita, but she dies during childbirth.
Meanwhile, 1665 is coming. Plague -ridden London needs Merivel's class doctors, and he is returning to his former profession, saving thousands of lives.
As soon as he lost his only daughter during the disastrous London fire of 1666 , Robert shows such dedication that he is receiving universal attention. And his healing of Charles II’s mistress, formally - of his wife, finally returns him the long-awaited “royal mercy” ...
